If you are seriously considering building a wind generator, you’ll more than likely find you’ll be choosing between the Earth4energy wind generator plans or the GreenDIYEnergy’s DIY homemade wind turbine plans. the reason for this is pretty simple, both sets of plans work and are easy to follow, whereas many of their competitors products are often incomplete and out of date.

Now we want to be completely upfront and let you know we do own both sets of these plans and have used both to build some wind turbines. When we compared the plans side-by-side, we found it was much easier to follow the GreenDIYEnergy plans, they offered more instructional videos covering the actual building of the wind turbine. We also found the plans to be laid out better than the Earth4energy, with better photos.

Some reasons we prefer the GreenDIYEnergy Wind Turbine Plans over it’s competitors:

Their plans are easier to follow. (really step by step)

All Wind Turbines output D/C power, but you need A/C power to run appliances – that’s where inverters come in.

If you’ve read this far, then you probably already know that the DIY Wind Turbine Plans final product will also output d/c power, but your house runs on a/c, not to worry, that’s what inverters are for.

All a inverter does is take the d/c power and switch it into a a/c power which has a more smooth wavelength that can be used to power anything your heart desires.

If this seems a little too easy, its because it really is this easy.

Just hook up one end of the inverter to the battery bank and the other end is used to plug in appliances, or a power strip that will allow you to power multiple appliances.

Inverters used to cost an arm and a leg up until the last 15 years or so, now they can be found for as little as 29 dollars. The whole key to how much power you can use, really comes down to the amount of batteries you have.

This is a picture of an inverter that can be used with your wind generator.

If you’re interested in learning more about inverters to use with your wind generator then we highly recommend using the plans that can be found by following this link.

Could A Set Of The Earth4energy Wind Turbine Plans Really Help Reduce Your Power Bill

If you’ve already spent some time researching wind turbine plans, then you’ve probably already seen the popular wind turbine plans offered by Earth4energy and wondered if they really worked or if they were just a scam. The good news is… These plans really do work!

It doesn’t matter if you’ve never worked with your hands before, Earth4energy has made it so anybody who can read, and follow a step-by-step guide can construct their own home built wind generator with relative ease. You’ll also never have to worry about your plans going out of date, they are continually updating their wind power plans.

Now here’s the best thing about getting the Earth4energy plans, what you’re really getting is a full-blown renewable energy course, that not only teaches you how to build a wind turbine, but also teaches you how to build solar panels also.

Detail of the Earth4energy renewable energy manual

Review the outline below to find out what’s included with the one-time price of $49.97.

The Earth4Energy Home Built DIY Renewable Energy System is divided up into six different sections that are made up of both manuals and instructional videos.

You will need a charge controller to be able to use the power generated by your wind turbine.

Since, it seems like lots of people are confused by the charge controller, we’ll give a short and to the point explanation about what it is, and where it comes into play with the system as a whole.

What a charge controller is and why you need one

Picture your wind turbine spinning away producing watt after watt of electricity to the battery bank, sounds great right. Not so fast, if you don’t have a charge controller in place, all you will end up with is a bunch of overcharged batteries that will begin to burn out one by one, since they can’t handle being overcharged.

This is the inside of a charge controller for a wind turbine.

Now, lets take a look at what the controller will do to help prevent this from happening.

You now have your wind generator up and have run the wires toward the battery bank, stop right there. You first need to hook those wires into the controller, and then the battery bank.

The charge controller will monitor the amount of power being fed to the batteries and before the batteries ever have a chance to overcharge, the controller will cut the power being fed to the batteries and dump the excess power, thus saving your batteries.

There is one more little part needed between the batteries and the wind generator, and that is a blocking diode (very cheap and easy to install). All a blocking diode will do is keep the batteries from sending the power back to the wind turbine causing the motor to turn.

This is a blocking diode for a wind generator.

That is really all there is to a charge controller and a blocking diode.

If your still not quite comfortable don’t worry too much since all this is covered in a quality set of plans.

If you’re interested in learning more about charge controllers and blocking diodes to use with your wind generator then we highly recommend using the plans that can be found by following this link.

You will need to store the power created by your wind generator, thats where the batteries will come into play.

Building a wind generator is a fun project, but it’s all for nothing, unless you can use the power the turbine produces. Kind of like have a corvette with now engine, fun to look at but doesn’t do you any good getting to work.

Since most of the real details can be found in a quality guide we won’t bore you here with the specifics, but we will tell you the best types of batteries to use.

So what are the best types of batteries to use for your wind generator system

Deep cell batteries, the kind that power golf carts, forklifts, and a ton of other things. These are quite expensive new, but you’ll find that it’s really easy to find used ones for free or for literally pennies on the dollar.

Now that you know you’ll be able to find these batteries easy enough, here comes the catch, you’ll have to recondition them yourself. Before you say to yourself that has to be difficult, stop and consider this, the batteries are free and there are guides you can buy online that will teach you how to recondition them yourself.

These guides run about 50 or so dollars and the things you’ll need to buy to recondition a battery only cost a few bucks.

New batteries can run at minimum $100 per battery, free batteries are free, and for under $100 dollars including the guide you can have a whole garage full of batteries for you new wind turbine.

If you’d like to use the same guide we use to recondition batteries, just follow this link.

We had been using an old ham radio tower that we found in our local paper for 20 bucks, but when we saw we could build it using the shopping list supplied with the latest set of plans we ordered we gave it a go.

We used the exact dimensions in the guide and had it finished in about 35 minutes time. It took us over 2 hours just to go and get the other tower and get it to the house, so this new set of plans turned out to be a real time saver, not to mention it looked way more professional than the old wind generator tower we had before.

Our new tower stands 10 feet tall and is nestled in our backyard away from any obstacle that could block the wind from hitting our wind turbine blades.

Once you have you new tower up, make sure it’s plum. (level on the vertical)

What makes a good motor for building a wind generator

When you start the process of building your first wind turbine, the motor is usually the part most people tend to have the most questions about, so lets clear it up a bit.

You want a d/c motor – not an a/c motor

Look for a low rpm motor

It should also be high voltage ( over 12 volts )

Shaft needs to be the same diameter as hub

Now that we know we want a D/C motor that can produce high volts while spinning at low rpms, and the shaft has to fit our hub, it’s just a matter of finding the right one at the right price. ( Over the last few months these motors have become very popular and the price may reflect that new popularity. Still worth the price. )

One key piece of information that most people tend to have a hard time understanding is the rpm to volts formula, so lets break it down this way.

Easy way to understand this is to divide the rpms by the volts, the magic number we are looking for is under 20.

Lets say we find a motor that has a rpm rating of 400 rpm’s at 30 volts, this gives us a great motor that produces 13.3 volts at very low rpms.

If this all seems a bit confusing relax, that’s what the manuals are for.

If you’re interested in learning more about the proper motors to use with your wind generator then we highly recommend using the plans that can be found by following this link.

Before you order a set of DIY wind generator plans, it’s best to fully understand how all the parts of a wind turbine come together. With that said, lets take a look at all the parts that make up a wind generator.

Parts that make up a wind turbine

Part 1. Generator:

The generator will take the power from the wind and convert it to a d/c wave which is then fed to the battery bank via the charge controller.

Part 2. Blades and Hub:

The blades which are attached to the hub, catch the wind and spin the d/c motor, thus producing power that can be fed to the battery bank.

Part 3. Mounting Body and Tail:

The body is the base the motor will be securely attached to, and the tail is then mounted to the rear of the base, allowing for the wind generator to always face the direction of the wind.

Part 4. Tower:

The tower is where the body of the wind turbine will be mounted. It is important to make sure the tower is high enough to allow for full wind speeds. Make sure the tower is not being blocked out by trees, houses, or any other structure that can cut wind speed.

Parts that make up the power storage and power usage

Part 1. Charge Controller:

The charge controller will allow you to see the amount of power being produced by the wind turbine. The charge controller is also crucial to not over charging the batteries. Without a charge controller you will end up wearing the batteries out.

Part 2. Battery Bank:

The battery bank allows you to store the energy produced by your wind generator. You can if you like power any d/c appliances you have directly from the battery bank.

Part 3. Inverter:

The inverter takes the stored energy produced by your wind turbine and changes it from a d/c current to a friendly a/c current that can now be used to power any of your normal household appliances. These can be lights, tv’s, computers, whatever you like as long as it is a/c.

Attach the wind generator to the power storage and you now have usable power created using the wind.

Professional looking wind generator body and tail

It seems like almost every set of homemade wind turbine plans fall a little short when it comes to the appearance of the actual wind turbine body. This is no longer the case, now it is possible to build your very own wind generator that looks like it came off the showroom floor, but for a fraction of the cost.

You may be used to seeing the old wood style body that looks like it was put together in a garage. We wanted ours to look like it wasn’t built at home by a novice, so when we found out that greendiyenergy had a set of plans that would allow us to build a body and tail that looks professional we had to get those plans.

If your not sure what the difference is just take a look at the pictures below.

Since building the blades for your wind generator involves cutting and sanding make sure to use proper safety gear such as glasses and ear plugs.

If you are planning on building a DIY wind turbine yourself from start to finish it is crucial that you invest in the right plans from the word go. Don’t try to use free you-tube plans since all you’ll end up with is a lot of broken blades flying all over the place, spend the extra money on plans, you’ll be glad you did.

Wind generator blades

The truth is the blades are actually quite easy to make and don’t require much time to build.

It is best when first starting out that you build your blades using PVC, later when you get the hang of it you can always build a nice set of balanced hardwood blades, but don’t even worry about that now, since you will be able to produce plenty of power with the less expensive and easier to build PVC blades.

It is important to note that the blades should be balanced and smooth. You will find all the info you need to balance and smooth them by following a good set of wind turbine plans.

If you don’t feel comfortable making your own wind generator blades don’t worry to much since you can find plenty of pre-made blades online, some even include a hub. This will increase the price to build but can save you time in the build.
Wind turbine hub

Just as with the blades you can make it yourself in very little time, but we found it easier to just find a hub that was already milled and ready to go. We decided to stay away from making the hub out of wood since, it would need to be replace after a couple years in the elements.

Side note: If your motor shaft is the wrong diameter for your hub, don’t worry you can use a hub arbor to adjust for the difference.
